Finding the Way

Guiding Principle: A creative and practical problem solver.
Descriptor: 1) Generates a variety of solutions, builds a case for the best response, and critically evaluates its effectiveness.
Evidence: A) Can interpret some of the many signs that help people navigate.
B) Understand a familyıs need to navigate in their environment.
C) Produce various kinds of maps.

Content Area: Geography: Skills and Tools

Content Standard: Students will know how to construct and interpret maps and other geographic tools to locate and derive information about different environments.

Two Performance Indicators: 1) Student will write a story describing the different ways people found their way across land and sea.
2) Student will create a compass point caricature using grid squares and the 8 compass points for a reference.

Evidence of Performance Indicators: A) Students will publish a story ("Finding the Way"). B) Students will complete and create a compass point journey on a map grid.

Product 1: Published Story
Characteristics of a Quality Product:
A) Six alternatives in navigating
B) Describe each alternative in detail
C) Evaluate the effectiveness of each alternative (Does it work?)
D) Choose best alternative

Product 2: Compass Point Caricature
Characteristics of a Quality Product:
A) Recognizable face
B) Use of all eight compass points
C) Demonstrate understanding of scale (grid=100")
D) Use of compass rose. Start and finish points.
