Heirloom Seeds

Individual seed packets collected and preserved from the THMS Heirloom Seed Garden.

Jaune Flamme Tomato- Beautiful apricot-shaped heirloom from France.  Great for drying, retains deep orange color.  Excellent bitey flavor.  Very productive, fruits borne in clusters and weigh 2-3 ounces, about the size of a large apricot.  Indeterminate, 70-80 days from transplant.

Aunt Molly's Ground Cherry- 70 days.  outstanding Polish variety is prized for its clean flavor.  Fruits are ? to ?" in diameter and are encased in a papery husk that turns brown when the fruits ripen.  Stores 3-4 weeks in the husk.  Extremely productive plants have a sprawling habit and grow 18" tall and 24" wide.  Excellent citrus flavor.


Big Rainbow Tomato- 90 days. (ab, asc)  (Indeterminate)  [Introduced in 1990 by SESE  Heirloom from  Polk Co., Minn.]  This is the most visually spectacular tomato we have grown.  As fruits ripen they resemble a rainbow: green on the shoulder, yellow in the middle, and red on the blossom end.  When fully ripe, the fruits are gold on the stem end and red on the blossom end.  Early fruits weigh over 2 lbs. with little catfacing or deformities.  'Big Rainbow' has very good resistance to foliar disease and continues to bear until frost.  Pkt.


Black Cherry tomato-  Black Cherry produces an abundance of perfectly round cherry tomatoes with the classic black tomato taste. Flavor is sweet, rich and complex. Fuits pick easy from the stem. Vines are vigorous and highly productive till frost. If you have not yet tried these you are in for a real treat!

Black Hugh's Tomato- 89 days.  (Indeterminate)  [Introduced in 1990 by SESE.  Heirloom from Madison Co., Indiana, since 1940.]  'Hughs' has gained a local reputation for its meaty fruit and sweet delicious flavor.   It was rated as one of the better-flavored of 250 tomatoes grown during the summer of 1988.   Though it is a late maturing variety it is a heavy producer with some disease resistance.  This pale yellow heirloom beefísteak rivals the flavor of the best heirloom red tomatoes.  Pkt.


Black Prince Tomato- The Black Prince Tomato is known in Russia as "Czerno Prinz Tomat" and next to the Black Krim Tomato, this is among the most popular and best known of Black Tomatoes. This outstanding tomato variety was originally introduced from Irkutsk, Russia (in Siberia) some years ago and is typically regarded as a true Siberian tomato variety due to its outstanding qualities in northern climates. Although the Black Prince could be considered a rare heirloom tomato in the United States and the United Kingdom, this tomato is widely raised in Russia and is regularly sold commercially by some of the larger vegetable seed companies in Russia today. In fact, its cultivation is so widespread in Russia that of late, a company in Volgograd has begun the marketing of a product called "Black Prince Tomato Oil", which is an extract of the Black Prince Tomato. This product is now being widely applied in Russia's food, cosmetics, agricultural and pharmaceutical industries and has been tested to have a wide range of health benefits due to the abundance of lypocene in this Russian tomato.  Black Prince produces an abundance of medium sized red-brown tomatoes with dark brown (black) shoulders that features a rich, juicy taste. In fact, in a recent tomato taste test performed by Country Living Magazine, the Black Prince Tomato ranked as the #8 tomato in their taste test. Black Prince is a great tomato for your northern garden this year! Indeterminate. Matures in about 70 days.

Camp Joy Cherry Tomato-
Heavy bearing heirloom variety that offers an abundance of luscious 1" fruit with huge, well-balanced, sweet tomato flavors. One of Gary Ibsen's favorite cherry varieties. Strong disease resistant. Perfect for snacking or salads.

Russian Pear Tomato-


Chateau Rose Tomato- Very nice pink, crack resistant, medium slicing tomato.  One of our favorites.  We are always amazed by all the prfect fruits.  Indeterminate, 90 days.


Yellow Pear-


Trophy Tomato- Introduced in 1870 by Colonel George E. Waring, Jr., of Newport, Rhode Island at the enormous price of $5.00 per packet.  Purchased by many in pursuit of the $100.00 reward for the largest specimen tomato.  Within a year, nearly every American seed company was carrying Trophy.  Sweet, mild flavor, 5-7 ounce, round tomatoes are ideal for slicing.  Indeterminate, 80 days from transplant.


Black Russian Tomato- Very unusual, almost purple to black skin with reddish-black flesh. Large, slightly irregular fruits.


Garden Peach Tomato- Offered under a variety of names to American gardeners since the middle 1800’s.  Fuzzy fruits ripen to yellow and often have a hint of pink blush when fully ripe.  Outstanding flavor, rarely cracks.  Indeterminate, 70-75 days from transplant.


Sochulak Tomato- 70 days.  From Italy this is considered by many to be  the most flavorful paste type tomato of all.  Early and  heavy yields of pink oblate meaty fruits are great for  fresh use or cooking.    This Oxheart type grows from  medium to very large making for quick processing work


Pink Grapefruit Tomato- 75 days. A really unique tomato of medium size.  Beautiful yellow fruit are blushing pink inside (hence their name). They have sweet-tart taste that does have citrus overtones. A productive, round tomato that is a winner.

Pink Ping Pong tomato- 70- 75 days. Pink Ping Pong's high-yielding vines produce round,  cherry-type fruits that are pink in color and the size of ping pong balls. It bears large quantities of salad-sized,  superbly flavored fruit over a long period of time and is crack resistant.


Yellow Stuffer Tomato-


Spoon Tomato- This is Lycopersicon pimpinellifolium , one of the wild progenitors of the domestic tomato. The vigorous plants produce sprays of pea sized fruit of unremarkable but pefectly acceptable flavor. The smallest tomato available. Main season.


Moldovan Green Tomato- The Green Moldovan is a very rare, tropical tasting, heirloom  tomato that is a bright lime green colour. Beefsteak type fruit weigh around 280g


Wonderlight Tomato- This outstanding and unusual yellow tomato variety is  known in Russia as " Limmony Liana " (translation: " Lemon Vine ")  and produces an abundance of lemon shaped , 4 to 6 oz. yellow tomato fruits. This tomato offers a great flavor and can double as an attractive decoration for the table or salad bar, but also makes excellent sauce or even yellow catsup. This tomato will excel in the short season and cold climates of northern areas. Indeterminate. About 95 days to maturity.

Zapotec Tomato- 80 days. Lycopersicon esculentum. Plant produces good yields of beautiful pink tomatoes. The flavor is very sweet. It's pleated shape makes it very ornamental. Excellent for stuffing, or for slicing to show off its scalloped edges. A heirloom variety from Zapotec Indians of Mexico. Indeterminate. pk/20

Bean Pole Dry

Mayflower- 100 Days. Some say these seeds were brought over on the Mayflower in 1620. Grown in the Carolinas for centuries. Get flavor.  They hold their shape when cooked.  Very productive. Also good as a dry bean.


Flagg- Rare variety from Canada. Large beans cook quickly. Smooth texture, slight Lima/Butter Bean flavor. Good in hot or cold dishes.

Calypso- Rare variety developed in Europe with a yin-yang marking. Retains shape and firm texture, good in soups and baked dishes.

Peregion- 90 days.Vended by Vermont Bean Seed, which offers this description: "(95 days) Oregon heirloom with unsurpassed eating quality. Perhaps the most beautiful of all dried beans. Produces differently colored beans in every pod - solid mocha-colored, bittersweet chocolate-colored many with contrasting stripes or marbling. Small-sized beans are excellent for baking and delicious in soups. Keeps color contrast after cooking. Hardy, very productive bush-type plants can be a bit sprawly. Disease resistant and easy to grow."
 

Tiger Eye- This is a gorgeous dry bean. Orange with dark maroon swirling stripes resembling a tiger's eye. Similar taste to a pinto bean, but creamier in texture. Easy to grow and harvest. Also great eaten as a green snap bean.  from ME LA N


Black Coco- (90 days)  Black Coco is much larger, oval round and very shiny compared to other black "dry" type beans.


Zuni Shalako Bean-  Rare Heirloom from Zuni farmers.  Smooth texture and tender skin. Excellent choice for Southwest cuisine.


Black Nightfall- This lovely beans is navy beans sized with the color from black to light grey.  When cooked, it's a firm, whole brown bean with a piney flavor.  It's very rich.
